About altruistic communication and its evolution

Dawkins and Krebs in 1978 argued that it would be odd for animals to evolve ways of giving away useful information to their rivals. Communication in that sense would be altruistic, and it is very difficult for altruistic behaviors to evolve.
Since then, it became clear that most messages animals send are not messages about the world, but about themselves.
There are animals that communicate to the rest of the group about dangers or sources of food or similar, so what about this? Do we have genes that make us help the group with the risk of helping our rivals and lower our chances to have access to females? What is this about, really? Maybe it's supposed to prove the individual's value to the group?
