In the spirit of honest feedback for improvement, to some people, it may sound off to read a thread for an introduction with only "I'm new".
Those people would expect some background information about the person, and when it's not there they may wonder "is this person aware of basic social dynamics"? And when their answer is "hmmm not sure", you may be earmarked as "that guy (or girl, not even sure based on a nickname only) who may be a bit socially clueless" and lose some status and respect in their eyes.
