The Wild Diet by Abel James combines nutrition with efficient fat-burning exercises to deliver weight loss and a healthy lifestyle.
- Do shorter exercises reps at high intensity
- Eat organic, mostly vegetables
- Drink plenty of water (but not during meals)
Abel James says that many diets asking you to stop eating your favorite foods and exercising for hours on an end are a nightmare.
And they’re not effective, either.
He proposes a different system in The Wild Diet where quality trumps quantity.
Intensity Over Endurance
Have you noticed the difference between the physics of endurance athletes and sprinters?
One is thin and wiry, the other look toned and strong.
Which one do you prefer?
To get the body of a sprinter, you need more intensity and less time spent on training.
Indeed research shows that exercises of rapid and explosive sets release growth hormones and testosterone that burn fat and build muscle at the same time while also inhibiting stress hormones.
High Intensity Exercises
Sprinting as we have seen is an example of a high intensity exercise.
Other examples are pull-ups and squats.
Full Body Exercises
Go for full body exercises anytime you can.
Squats is an example of a compound full-body exercise because it activates several muscle areas of your body (ie.: legs, buttocks, arms, shoulders and core).
Full body exercises burn more calories than isolated exercises like sit-up and curls.
7 Minutes Workout
Abel James really means it when he says “short”: in only lasts 7 minutes.
- One minute warm-up (rope jumping or boxer shuffle)
- 20 seconds sprints for five minutes with 10 seconds break between each
- One minute cool down (rope jumping again or jogging)
During your 20 seconds sets push yourself to do the maximum you can. This is what trigger the hormones that burns fat.
The Wild Diet Food Plan
The Wild Diet, like most nutrition books, recommends you eliminate processed food and added sugars. It suggests you eat lots of proteins because it requires lots of energy to digest and that helps your body burn fat storage.
What You Can Eat:
- Animal products like butter, cream, and cheese
- Alcohol (particularly red wine and beer in moderation)
- Fermented foods
- Legumes – properly prepared.
- Non-gluten grains (wild rice, quino)
- Pasture-raised fatty meats (including saturated meat)
- Sourdough bread (not too often)
- Unlimited vegetables
- Wild seafood
- Bread (except sourdough)
- Gluten grains
Go for organic meat anytime you can and grass-fed animals. If it’s too expensive for you go for offcuts instead like liver, heart or stewing meat.
They are better than most non-organic meats.
Cheat Day Once a Week
Similar to The 4hour Body The Wild Diet says that once or twice a week you can eat anything you want.
Drink Lots of Water
Drinking lots of water works magic to keep our bodies working correctly.
And it also helps with weight loss by supporting the liver’s functions.
Abel James says that the liver is responsible for breaking down toxic substances like smoke, alcohol, food additives and even air pollution into smaller molecules that can be dissolved in water for disposal.
And it also happens our main fat-burning organ. The more water you feed it, the more efficiently it can detox.
Drink frequently every day without waiting to be thirsty.
Only exception is during mealtime as it can dilute the digestive juices.
The author says that these days vegan and vegetarian diets are all the rage. And we have seen that on this website with books such as:
But The Wild Diet takes a different stance.
It says that animal foods aren’t bad and provide us with crucial nutrients, that vegan meat substitutes can’t effectively provide.
Some examples are:
- Collagen for healthy skin and hair
- Iron for transporting oxygen in our blood
- Choline for a sustainable metabolism
If you are fully on a plant-based diet it’s fine, but you’ll need to get some substitutes.
Real Life Applications
High Intensity Full Body Workouts
I loved the workout ideas and the 7 minutes plans.
Does Exercise Help Losing Weight ???
Many sources these days contest the idea that working out helps in losing weight. Some even suggest that working out might exhaust your willpower and eat overeat afterwards.
Not Working for Food Addict
Food addict need a different kind of dieting regime. Bright Line Eating is a great resource for that.
Some content felt like padding and filling to me.
I don’t need to read that our planet is 70% water and that we are 90% water to understand that water is good for us (also because there is no relation really between how much water is present in our present and how much water is good for us).
Proper Workout Advice
The advise on workout for bigger muscle mass is effective and it’s the same in Bigger Leaner Stronger.
The diet recommendations are solid and sensible.
I am reading a bunch of books on health and nutrition recently… Really a lot of them.
So much of the information on nutrition was not ground-breaking for me. That being said, it was mostly spot on and the nutrition part is solid.
What I liked most though was the part on exercising. That’s what makes The Wild Diet stand out for me.
