Balance between being real and being high-powered
Quote from dsnw2022 on December 4, 2023, 8:37 pmI want to strike a balance between being authentic and open with people and looking cool (high power) at the same time.
For context: I recently become a parents and, as expected, have been very busy/occupied with baby duty. I don’t want to minimize the difficulty of being new parents with friends but also don’t want them to think that all we do are parenting and not having any fun. Because it’s not true, we still get time to relax at the end of the days and do fun things. BUT I don’t want to have to justify and explain things explicitly like that to them because that would just put in a lower power position.
Below are some of the interactions I experience and would like suggestions from the community on how you would go about responding to maintain that balance of being real and high-power?
- Friend 1: “You must have stayed at home all day and not go out at all right”, “What do you often do during the weekends, who do you hang out with?”
- Friend 2: “You probably have to wait until your baby is 3 years old to travel somewhere right?”. When hearing that we will go to a remote area for christmas to hang out with family, they ask "what would you do there?"
- Friend 3: “ What do you often do during the weekends?” “Do you guys go to XYZ (a neighborhood with lots of good restaurants a lot?”, "Do you guys go out and do stuff over thanksgiving?"

Quote from Sidney Lawson on December 6, 2023, 4:02 pmI am a new member, I am still building up my power awareness... but for christ sakes you have a baby... who gives a shit about you going out and travelling and stuff. You do whatever you do to make sure the baby survives... what people do you roll with?

I would just answer the question with what I really did.
