Dealing with a boss that double-binds (keeps contradicting themself)

Hey Lucio, so I have a boss that will constantly give contradicting directions as to how he wants things. Every time I do exactly what he says, he will complain about it. Let's say for example that he says to do A, then I do A, he will now complain that I should have done B. I try to keep a written record about everything that was said and lightly bring it to his attention but it's a lot to keep up with, he always makes weak excuses ("We do A because it's the way it's always done", "We do B because it's an improvement on A"). He isn't malicious about it, but it's really frustrating when someone keeps moving the goal post. How would you deal with this?
