Don't blame-shift too fast: it's weak (even when true)

This is most people's natural response when faced with an issue:

It wasn't me

And it's an especially potent knee-jerk reaction when we think it wasn't us.

Still, many times, it makes you come across as defensive and ego fragile (even when, in fact, it wasn't "your fault").

And when there are reasons to believe it may have been you, it makes you come across as sneaky and a potential liar.

So here's what to do:

  • Avoid saying "it wasn't me" first thing
  • Clear your name strategically: ie.: focus on solution, then say "by the way, just to be clear... "
  • Wait for the facts before saying "it wasn't me" if you're not 100% sure
  • Focus on solutions

This service provider is losing all my goodwill after a few of these cases:

My feeling starts being "it was never him".

At this point, I don't believe anymore it's true.

It wasn't him who did backups that send the website offline a few minutes, it wasn't him who did the same some days later, and it wasn't him with the bullet points now.

Yeah, sure.

Funny thing: even if it truly wasn't him, his knee-jerk reaction of clearing his name first still make him across as fragile ego.

He is still goodwill because he focuses too much on defending instead of fixing.

Service Provider (IF IT TRULY WASNT HIM): "We will fix your issue right away and make sure to use the blocks for the code, thank you for this advice.  would you kindly consider paying the regular service charge for this change? because I assure you that no one from my team made the changes. If not, it's okay.
