Friendship/Social Life: giving value in private vs public

Hello guys,
I would like to open a conversation as I'm finding a ramification I was not aware earlier: there is a different approach to giving value in private vs public. I mean that when you give value in public, people have to recognize it, so in a way there is a social cost to them. They must appear to others as they have received something from you. Whereas if you give value in private you don't have this issue.
What do you think?
