Getting ripped off has status ripple effects
Quote from John Freeman on August 2, 2023, 6:37 pmHello,
In short I got ripped off when buying a car for my new job. I lost $1000 in the process but could "give the car back". I limited the damage and avoided getting stuck with a malfunctioning car.
Today, I see the taker who took my money did more harm than just taking $1000 wasted my time and energy.
He also took some of my status.
The reasoning goes like that. When people ask me about the car I of course tell them the truth without all the details.
How do I look like? Like a gullible person. Not a flattering image.
Yes, of course many people have been ripped off and it's also the opportunity to bond with the people who have been ripped off.
But generally speaking this framed me as a victim. Most people went "Oh noooo". So of course I said "it's alright". And it is. I did not feel like any blow to my self-esteem or self-confidence. I sincerely view it as a learning experience. I was a beginner so I made beginner's mistake.
The fact is that in terms of image I took a blow. However it also has some positive side effects as people think I'm strong for going there by train everyday.
Also, having a car is a status symbol. So losing it took this newly gain status away from me as well.
Truth is I love the train so I'm happy with that. I get to study PU and write on the forum.
So this is an analysis purely in terms of status.
