"Good you pulled that power move. Now I know what game we're playing": Bagnaia on Martin

Bagnaia and Martin are fighting for the championship.

Martin overtakes Bagnaia with an aggressive -but not sanctionable in any way- move and touches him and pushing him off the racing line:

In many ways, it's a power move.

Bagnaia knows it.

But now it's a conundrum.

If he complains, he comes across as thin skinned, low-power, victimized... And causing drama-queen drama ("a bitch").

If he says he'll do the same back, it's overly aggressive and, again, thin-skinned. Just on the vengeful side rather than low-power. And if something happens... It will become a sign that he was seeking revenge and he will be sanctioned much harder.

If he says "it's all good" he can come across too nice guy who gets the slap and he's OK with it.

So this is what he replies when asked about it:

I think it's cool that it was him doing that. It's opening a situation that I like.

BANG!

Genius approach.

His frame is:

I was playing more fair before, so it's him who started this "anything goes".
And if he wants to play aggressively, I'm in it -and ready to rumble and dish it back out-.

A similar approach one can take in 1:1 real life:

  • It's good you did that, now I know better who you are

Or the vulnerable and slightlighly approach (and slightly judge-y):

  • Really sad you did that, it hurt me as I thought different of you

Some straight-talk vulnerability, with more high-power judgy:

  • Sad and disappointed you said that. I expected better

These last two work very well in relationships as well.

It’s very useful thank you. It could potentially be added to the “ power tech” module in power university.

Agreed,

I think it also goes well in the when to react to power moves. As it's a good alternative to ignoring or countering. It's a good middle ground surfacing technique: "I saw what you did". A kind of "I saw the hand" instead of "show me the hand". Kind of "active surfacing" as it's not completely "going meta" since the power move is not explained. If you guys agree I'll link to this thread, otherwise I won't.
