Her Body Language on a Blind Date: What Does It Mean?
Quote from Ali Scarlett on February 15, 2020, 12:26 amHey Lucio,
I just watched this YouTube video of a blind date and I'm not quite sure how to read this girl's body language.
From minute mark 1:45 - 4:00 I'm seeing a lot of body language that says she's uncomfortable. At 1:58 she begins touching and slightly moving the tea cups, then a couple seconds later begins adjusting her hair with her hands, and a few seconds after that readjusts her whole body in her chair communicating she's not yet at ease.
Now, Rubi (the girl on the date) later admitted she was nervous, but I don't know why. She was smoking before the date started and was high throughout the entire duration of the date, so that could have done it. At the same time, I have a couple of other theories:
- At minute mark 1:55, DDG (the guy on the date) complains about Lala (their mutual friend) having set them up on a blind date with no food by saying, "Lala ain't shit is she?" This is where we start to see displacement signals from Rubi in the form of signs of discomfort. While he says this jokingly (and probably to break the ice), it is a form of judgement and is a complaint DDG makes more than once throughout the date about a person Rubi is close to.
- Before the date even started, Lala gave Rubi a little information about the guy she'd be on the date with. Rubi knew going in that her date would be "fine" and that he "has money". When he arrived she found out it was a celebrity she coincidentally follows on Instagram that has a successful music career. So, not only did she know this guy was actually a millionaire with a Rolls-Royce, mansion, etc., but she saw an opportunity to network since she is trying to gain more success in her own music endeavors.
There's a chance she was nervous she'd mess up an opportunity to social climb DDG. At the same time, I've heard of a psychological effect called "The God Complex" where when regular people are in rooms with, meet, or even just see celebrities they basically start overreacting inside.
What do you think caused Rubi to show so much unrelaxed and uncomfortable body language?
Then, at minute mark 2:12, she transitions from uncomfortable and unrelaxed body language to closed body language by crossing her arms while asking a barrage of questions. Almost as if to say, "Prove to me you're worth building rapport with and maybe then I'll open up".
Rubi: "So, what's up? How's your day been? What have you been doing today?"
I get the feeling she was just using this body language while asking these questions quickly to cover up her nervousness, but women can play so many games (and play them so well) that it's hard to tell.
Why do you think Rubi showed so much closed/defensive body language?
Thanks,
Ali
I had a couple other questions about this interaction, but didn't want to make this post too long. I strongly recommend you watch the entire video because I think you'd gain a lot of ideas for content on how your students should deal with these types of women (more commonly found in LA).
