BTW, found two names that I like best: "manipulative obstruction-making" and "whataboutism tasking" (from John).

Hello Ali,

my favourite is "whataboutism tasking", however I think that "covert/manipulative" (from you Ali) also describes well what is happening.

But "Covert whataboutism tasking" or "manipulative whataboutism tasking" are too long I think.

"Covert diversion tasking" or "manipulative diversion tasking" but also too long maybe.

Lucio is the final judge. Cool to brainstorm with you anyway, Ali.

How about "you have the ball".

Or “passing the hot potato”!

A week later, I'm personally leaning towards "whataboutism (tasking)".

The reason is...

try to make this experiment:

Did you remember any of the names proposed here?

If so, chances are it was the easier and more common expressions "hot potato", "you have the ball", and "whataboutism".

It's because they're easier to remember.
And, crucially, easier to associate them with the behavior -"recall factor"-.

So albeit neither are perfect descriptions, "whataboutism" better describes the dynamic, in my opinion (both "hot potato" and "you have the ball" imply that the topic being passed around is the same. But more times than not, the issue/task they bring up is different).
