How to change profile pictures / nickname

With the social login option, the system was automatically pulling profile pictures from the social media one had used for the initial login.

Since we're dealing with potentially sensitive topics here, I don't think that was a smart default option, and I've received questions on how to change profile pictures / nicknames.

REMOVING PROFILE PICTURES

Profile pictures are not being automatically imported anymore: so if you're a new user, the profile picture doesn't concern you.

And if your profile picture is showing and you want it removed, I'll have to do it for you by deleting the picture from the media folder.
Just write it here and I'll do so ASAP.

To add profile pictures, I think it has to go through Gravatar. I haven't personally done so in a while, but if you're interested write here and we'll find out how.

CHANGING NICKNAMES

To change nicknames, hover on your name at the top right corner, and click on "edit profile".

You will go to the WordPress dashboard.

This is how to change your public nickname once you're there:

This is especially relevant for those users who originally purchased PU as "guests", since it's possible that their public name will be the email address they used.

I might have changed it myself for you, but if I haven't, now you know how to do it.

Cheers!

Huge thanks for this!
Protecting privacy is an awesome way to encourage people to share more on sensitive topics.

If only there was an easy way to manage websites.

CHANGING USERNAMES

Changing usernames is different than "changing nickname".

It can be helpful to change your username because people who want to "@" you will have to use your original username, and not nickname.
Plus, if people click on your profile, in the URL your original username will show (albeit keep in mind that only logged-in users can click on your profile).

Changing the username is not as straightforward, but it can be done.

I copy-paste from another thread in the private forums:

We can do a workaround though, and create a new user name for you from scratch.

Options:

Create a new user, start using the new user, let the old user in place

We can create a new user with your preferred username.
You can then can start using that new one and let the old one "fade away".

Since the nicknames will be the same (or highly similar, not yet sure if it's possible to have two exactly identical nicknames), there is still the "sense of continuity".

If you don't have any previous forum posts, or if you only have few of them, then this is probably the best option for you.

Create a new user, delete the old user, transfer all the forum posts to the new username

I believe it's also possible that, after creating the new user, we can delete the current user, and transfer the current user's forum posts to the new one.

See screenshot when I did a test to delete one user:

However, I've never done that before.

So consider it as a (small) risk that the forum posts you've already written might not be transferred (if you have several good posts already I will make a test before trying this one out as I don't want to lose good content).

Keep it as it is (and just change the nickname)

And of course, the third option to keep it as it is, and just change the nickname.

PREVENTING THIS ISSUE

To avoid this issue in the first place,  I recommend to all lurkers who want to eventually join in the forum discussion to sign up with a username they feel comfortable with.

That means that you better avoid signing up with Facebook (unless you already have a nickname there) and/or with your email as the username.
Feel free to use your main email for the sign-up, it doesn't show up publicly, the main thing to avoid is that you don't use the email as a username.

Instead, do the "normal" sign up, and pick an anonymous username you're comfortable with.
