How to choose what skill to learn next
Quote from John Freeman on August 20, 2022, 11:41 amHello everyone,
here is something I want to share with you. There are so many things to learn! An example from TPM: shall I learn first power dynamics, social skills, dating skills, frame control, etc.
1st criterion: the foundationsÂ
Some skills are foundational to learn other skills: Boolean logic for computer science, writing for journalism, social skills for power dynamics, etc.
2nd criterion: your goals and limitations
Another question is: what is limiting me right now to accomplish my goals?
What skills am I missing that is preventing me from getting what I want?
3rd criterion: duration of skill acquisition
The question here is: how long should I learn and practice this skill?
Once again I think it depends on your goals and limitations. Let’s take leadership. You can learn it during your whole life of course.
But it depends on your goals: do you want to be the greatest leader/expert in leadership? Or do you want to be a leader at work or in your group of friends?
For me, I found that I’m an avid learner of a skill until I notice that it’s not what is limiting me anymore.
For instance, in power dynamics I’m nowhere near Lucio’s skills and knowledge.
However I don’t feel that it is what is limiting me right now in my life.
I think what is limiting me is negotiation skills and persuasion skills. I realized that these are also foundational skills to power dynamics.
Now my goal is to be a master negotiator. So I’ll study until I will feel that I master it enough from my own subjective appreciation.
Of course this is also relative to your environment. If you’re in an environment with good to great negotiators you will have to work and study more than if you are in an environment with poor negotiators.
Cheers!
