John: I'm also quite sure that when my boss was looking for me and I went home, my coworker was very happy to tell her so.
Quite possible, if not likely.
"Oh, he said it was 17:30 and he was going home unluckily. But I'm here, can I help you with something?"
A good way to insulate against those types of games: tell your boss before going, or even on the way out:
You: "(I'm going) do you need help with anything for the day?"
95% they will say "all good", but they will greatly appreciate the gesture. Plus you cover all downsides in case they were going to need something from you, and you cover against sneaky colleagues.
