How to give negative feed-back about a subordinate to your boss

Hello TPM community,

in the recent events with the bad resident I learned tons. Again, Lucio's right saying that going in these uncomfortable experiences there is a lot of opportunity for learning.

My mistake was that I was the "ram" (per PU) or the "whistle-blower". I was the one who highlighted and tried to solve the problem.

Machiavellianly speaking that's really bad. As I found out there is no upside to be this person. No one will come to you and say: "Phew, thanks to you we dodged a bullet. You were courageous to bring this problem to our attention and working to solve it. Here is more status, please take it."

Basically, your name become associated with the culprit. So no upside. And the culprit can exert revenge on you: both downsides.

What I will do next time is either:

  1. Wait until my boss asks me questions about this resident: I will start with the positive to show that it's not personal and then with the negative. I'll say it as if I wanted to protect the person. This will make this suspicious and they will feel like investigating. So they will be the ram (machiavellian).
  2. Wait until my boss says something negative about the person: so there I will follow on the negative not lead on the negative. I also power-align. I will use the same positive then negative technique as above.

So it's about cultivating good relationships, documenting the mistakes and wait for the opportunity to strike. A counter-ambush in a way. This is not something to be dealt frontally. And as I said in another post when we criticize other people (or their work) we draw attention to ours.

So the script is: "I really like this person (to say it's not personal) and they do well this and this (to be/look objective). But (and here the "but" is important to stress the negative) since you ask me I noticed a couple of (small) things that are similar to those you describe (follows + power aligns: no risk since everythin I will say is what the boss is already thinking. I'm just reinforcing her suspicions) like...".

So Machiavellian mode here. For the good of the team and the patients.

Also, I personally dislike manipulators so I had a negative bias towards her making me overly-aggressive in my pursuit of what was justice to me.

Cheers.
