How To Respond To This Move

Heyya guys!

Super hyped to be here, joined PU two days ago.

I've been watching videos trying to understand power dynamics better.

I came across this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSS1L56DKFI&t=2278s

At 29:14, someone in the audience asks "What's your favourite colour?"

Guy on the left (from viewer pov) says "Yellow's my favourite colour"

Guy on the right (Cole Sprouse) says "Yellow? Eeeeewhh" *Disgusted face and triggers laughter*

My question: How should guy on the left have reacted? He didn't do much but I guess he shouldn't have laughed.

But it was still a one up from Sprouse from my understanding. How could the guy have evened it out?

These situations are not uncommon in groups as well.

Like if someone asks you what your favourite food is, you reply something not too conventional (I love chicken tripes) and someone else reacts like Cole did (Chicken tripes? Ewwwwww)

A couple I use:

Don't be scared of the tripes bro.  It's all good

Don't be hating on the tripes bro peace out

Pretty much just as stupid as what he said.  But as long as you respond and keep it light.

Thanks sir!

And if I may ask, what about the video example with the favourite colour thing?

I can't see how he'd get out of it

Welcome here mate!

I think what Kevin / Transitioned meant is:

Just don't take it too seriously, you don't necessarily need to defend on small stuff like that.

And I'd also generally agree with that -see the "Start Here" page for example, the ultimate goal is to see the game, but not to take things too personally-.

Notice that he turns towards his friend and smiles.
It's not really an attack, more like an attempt to liven up the mood.

Still, you're right, technically it was a one-up and he lost some power.
If he wanted to respond:

  • Make a "what the hell" type of face, as if to say "not cool"
  • Right after he says "green" comment with "green, bro, that's like Peter Pan"

It's anything but the wittiest come back, but it doesn't have to be genius, simply to show that you're not cool being one-down and you're going to even the scores when he pushes you down.

P.S.:

Both to improve general communication, and to make the most out of the forum (ie, in this case: embed the youtube video at the right time, transcribe the dialogue, come up with your own answer).
