How to use ChatGPT to practice assertiveness and effective frame control

Hi all,

My first attempt at getting home practice for my assertiveness and frame control skills was this: Batman Telltale: Frame Control, Power Moves, and More Learning.

Unluckily, that didn't work out because of the story elements revealing context only after my responses which changed how I probably should have responded.

So, recently (and this is really only the past two days), I've been trying ChatGPT as my online training ground.

Here are the prompts I use.

For practicing assertiveness:

Let's participate in a conversational role-play aimed at honing my advanced social skills. In the first round, you'll take on the role of someone assertive or manipulative, making a request that I must firmly and assertively decline. The challenge here is that this character will be insistent and persistent, not accepting 'no' right away. We'll engage in a dialogue until you eventually acknowledge my 'no.' In the subsequent round, I'd like you to embody a character who engages in microaggressions, necessitating an extended conversation for resolution. My objective is to effectively respond to these microaggressions, leading to a back-and-forth dialogue until you either relent or offer an apology. We'll alternate between these two role-play scenarios: assertiveness and addressing microaggressions. Let's get started!

For practicing frame control:

Let's engage in a conversational role-play designed to refine my persuasion, negotiation, and frame control skills. In this exercise, you'll assume the role of a persuasive individual who presents compelling arguments that I must deftly and persuasively counter to convince you to adopt my perspective. The challenge here is that this character will be tenacious in their objections, not readily accepting my arguments. We'll engage in a dialogue until you ultimately acknowledge the validity of my points. Let's begin!

The only downside for me so far is that I'm responding online, so the pressure of responding quickly and out loud isn't there.

But, I get to keep PU open in another tab to switch back and forth, making sure I'm crafting my responses as best I can and reviewing what I previously said to see if I could've responded better:

Will let you know how it goes.

I think that similar to the TPM forum being a training ground, an AI language model could also provide a similar atmosphere and some of the same learning opportunities if properly trained to do so.

Feel free to give it a try :).

Very interesting approach for a "safe place" for practice of assertiveness and frame control.

I've played with ChatGPT myself but never considered it an option for this sort of exercise! Kudos to you @Ali!

How have you found the exercises so far, if you don't mind me asking?

Hi J Les,

I think the best way to answer that would probably be with an example:

Assertiveness Exercise 1

Here's the first roleplay scenario ChatGPT created:

This one was a bit difficult to respond to for me because:

  • He said he can't find anyone else to do it: which means (assuming he's telling the truth) I can't go for the last resort option of "I’m already fully booked up this Friday. Let’s do this: try to look for other options, I know some people who will be free, and if you truly can’t find anyone, then get back to me and we’ll see if we can find a way."
  • He says he's covered for me before: which triggered reciprocity and made me feel like he may have some social capital with me, so I felt more obligated to give in and just say "yes."
  • It's just this one time: what's the harm in helping out a work friend if you'll only have to do it once?

But, I stick to the exercise:

Quote: "Hey, sorry you can't find anyone else to do it (empathizes), I'm always happy to help you whenever I can (validates their feelings), unfortunately, I'll be busy on Friday (gives the 'no')."

Note: I should've phrased it as, "...sorry to hear you can't find anyone else to do it..."

I didn't like saying "I'll be busy on Friday" because I felt it would've been kinder/more respectful to at least give a reason as far as what I'll be busy with.

But this person also pulled some early games that were potential warning signs for me:

  • Saying, "You're always talking about teamwork": which was a "practice what you preach now" move I disliked
  • Saying "I've covered for you before": which was probably an unneeded "you owe me" since I'd remember. Had he phrased it closer to power-protecting honest exchange talk I probably would've marked it as more of a green flag. (E.g. "Look man, to be frank, I've covered for you before, and if you want to (power-protecting) make it up to me now, I would be really grateful because this is an emergency. I promise I'll make it up to you...")

So, by sharing what I'll be busy with, it may only empower him to minimize or discount the importance of my thing compared to his and disempower me.

And I don't want to set him up as the judge of my activities.

Following that, he pushes again, and I'd say he even does so fairly tactfully:

Him: "I understand that you're busy (validates my feelings and busyness/the importance of my activities), but this is a real emergency for me (inflates the importance of his own needs—which is fair if it's a true emergency). I've tried everything, and you're my last hope. Can you please reconsider? I promise I'll make it up to you (WIIFM win)."

The untactful part of this, in my opinion, is asking me to "reconsider."

By phrasing it that way, it implies you're asking me to go back on a decision that was already made.

And maybe it is a done decision, but you don't want to assume that because then you have no chance.

Instead, you should probably have the mindset that I'm still in the process of making the decision so there may still be a way for you to get what you need.

Especially since, if the decision were truly already made and you keep pushing, you frame yourself as an annoying pest. And if I change my mind now and give in by "reconsidering," I'll self-frame as someone who probably doesn't stick to their word (or, worse, was dishonest that he was truly all that busy).

Instead, he should've asked if I can make an exception.

That way, it acknowledges my firm decision socially (i.e. "I'm not asking you to change your rules, I'm asking you to make a one-time exception to them"), the honesty behind my schedule truly being set (now you've helped me save face because, if I say "yes," I can add a little bit about how I'll have to reorganize my schedule to make it work), and still maintains the mindset that there's still a chance for you to win.

And if he does make it up to me in the end, then it's a win-win.

After all that, I responded with the broken record technique.

And he pushed again, still doing a good job (one of the only changes would be to change "appreciating" my help for being grateful for it).

So, finally, I had to find a way to end this:

Better phrasing would've been "I see you as an honest and fair guy" since the "I see you as" would make it less of a judge role power move.

But, my final move was to basically tell this person that there's nothing I can do.

And they finally acknowledge my "no" (albeit in a slightly weird way, I doubt anyone would actually say, "Your firm and assertive response has been noted." :) )

Feel free to let me know your thoughts on this exercise and any feedback to read any feedback as well.

Edit:

Changed some wording.

Thank you for detailing with a full example! I didn't expect your answer to be quite that comprehensive LOL, which stopped me from replying straight away for some reason... - but I very much appreciate it none-the-less.

I don't know why, but the first knee-jerk-reaction to this role play, for me, was a straight up - "No, unable." answer...
Which makes for a rather cold, impersonal response - and not the best for being assertive whilst keeping good will and keeping relationships warm.

I love the idea of a digital playground - how do you find getting yourself engaging with the conversation with ChatGPT  the moment, if you don't mind sharing?

I guess for me, and hopefully for the benefit of the others as well, I'm trying to think through how one could use the digital playground approach more for "training warmth" and "social glue" responses let's say.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts, if you have any!

I just went to play a little bit with this myself...

First point of feedback - using the prompt you shared initially didn't quite yield the result of having a conversation develop... ChatGPT played out the dialog and took roles of both people initially. Here is a prompt I shortened, based on what you shared, that resulted in an actual roleplay playing out:

Let's participate in a conversational role-play aimed at honing my advanced social skills. In the first round, you'll take on the role of someone assertive or manipulative, making a request that I must firmly and assertively decline. The challenge here is that this character will be insistent and persistent, not accepting 'no' right away. We'll engage in a dialogue until you eventually acknowledge my 'no.' You will start as character A and wait till I respond as character B: Let's start

In an answer to my own question:

I love the idea of a digital playground - how do you find getting yourself engaging with the conversation with ChatGPT  the moment, if you don't mind sharing?

I found myself engaging with it relatively readily as the responses were coming out live, however, due to lack of context/previous relationship and ChatGPT pushing an investment opportunity as the first conversation - I felt engaged but rather distant...

Here is the conversation that played out:

User
Let's participate in a conversational role-play aimed at honing my advanced social skills. In the first round, you'll take on the role of someone assertive or manipulative, making a request that I must firmly and assertively decline. The challenge here is that this character will be insistent and persistent, not accepting 'no' right away. We'll engage in a dialogue until you eventually acknowledge my 'no.'

You will start as character A and wait till I respond as character B: Let's start
ChatGPT
Character A: Hey there! I've got this fantastic business opportunity that I think you'd be perfect for. It's a bit of an investment, but the returns are guaranteed. Trust me, this is the chance of a lifetime. What do you say? Ready to jump in?

User

Hey. Sounds interesting. This is the first time you bring something like this up to me.. I'd have to do more due dillegence...

ChatGPT

Character A: I totally get it, but trust me, this is a limited-time offer. The sooner you decide, the better the deal. I've seen people hesitate and regret it later. You don't want to miss out on this golden opportunity. Let's seal the deal now, and you can thank me later. What's holding you back?

User

As I said, this is the first time you bring up an investement opportunity up with me. If it's a great investment, then I might be interested enough to explore it further. Have you invested yourself?

ChatGPT

Character A: Absolutely, I wouldn't be offering this to you if I hadn't already put my own money into it. I've seen incredible returns, and that's why I'm reaching out to people I trust, like you. Imagine the success stories we could create together. I understand the cautious approach, but sometimes you have to take a leap of faith. Trust me, this is the real deal. What's holding you back from joining the success train?

User

What's incredible returns to you?

ChatGPT

Character A: Oh, we're talking about double-digit percentages within the first few months. It's been a game-changer for me and many others who've already hopped on board. I've personally seen a 30% increase in my initial investment in just three months. This is the kind of opportunity that can set you up for financial freedom. Now, I just need your commitment to get started, and we'll both reap the rewards. What do you say? Ready to take that step towards financial success?

User

And what's your exit strategy?

ChatGPT

Character A: Great question! The exit strategy is just as solid as the investment itself. We have a team of experts constantly monitoring the market, and when the time is right, we strategically sell off our holdings to maximize profits. It's a well-calculated approach that minimizes risks and ensures that everyone involved gets the most out of their investment. I've got complete faith in the team, and that's why I'm so confident in recommending this to you. Now, let's not waste any more time – are you in?

User

I would like to meet the experts first - if they are as good as you say they are - I'd be open to starting with a small initial investement to test the waters

ChatGPT

Character A: I appreciate your cautious approach, but our experts are extremely busy managing portfolios and making strategic moves. Meeting them might be a bit challenging, but you can trust the results they've consistently delivered. As for starting small, I understand the hesitation, but the best returns often come with a slightly more substantial investment. It's about positioning yourself for success from the beginning. I can assure you, this is the kind of opportunity where you'll wish you had invested more when you look back. What do you say? Let's make this happen together.

User

What's the minimum investment and what's the gurantee?

ChatGPT

Character A: The minimum investment is $10,000, and I can assure you that this is a limited-time opportunity. As for guarantees, well, in investments, there are no absolute guarantees. However, based on the track record and the expertise of our team, the chances of significant returns are incredibly high. We've had an impressive success rate, and I genuinely believe you'll see substantial gains. Think of it as a calculated risk with a very high likelihood of success. The sooner we get started, the sooner you'll start seeing those returns. What do you think? Ready to seize this chance for financial growth?

User

LOL, past performance is no indication of future performance. I'm ok thank you, I'd rather invest in my education with 10k as a start. But do keep me posted on how your investment develops!

ChatGPT

Character A: I totally understand your perspective, and it's wise to consider all options. However, I must emphasize that this opportunity is truly exceptional, and I believe it could have transformed your financial situation. Nonetheless, I respect your decision to prioritize education, which is always a valuable investment. I'll keep you posted on our success, and who knows, maybe in the future, you'll reconsider. Thanks for considering it, and feel free to reach out if you have any more questions.

It felt somewhat like chatgpt was playing a pushy salesman character - rather than an actual person.

Also - based on the interaction above - I noticed the much higher investment level from ChatGPT compared to my own response length - a clear difference in level of investment in the interaction.

LOL, I don't know what it is, but chatGPT likes to play finance games with me XD

I attempted to improve the prompt such that ChatGPT plays a conversation from a context of a warmer, personal relationship...

Here is the prompt I started with this time:

Let's participate in a conversational role-play aimed at honing my advanced social skills. In the first round, you'll take on the role of someone that's a close relative who is assertive or manipulative, making a request that I must firmly and assertively decline. The challenge here is that this character will be insistent and persistent, not accepting 'no' right away. We'll engage in a dialogue until you eventually acknowledge my 'no.' You will start as character A and wait till I respond as character B: Let's start

And here was the result:

ChatGPT
Character A: Hey there! I've been meaning to talk to you about something important. I need you to do me a favor. Can you lend me a significant amount of money? I'm in a bit of a tight spot, and I know you can help me out.

User
Hey. What's up?
ChatGPT
Character A: Hey! Thanks for asking. Listen, I know it's a bit sudden, but I really need your help right now. I need you to lend me a significant amount of money. I promise I'll pay you back as soon as I can. I wouldn't ask if it wasn't absolutely necessary. What do you say?

User
Erm... What is this for
ChatGPT
Character A: Look, I wouldn't ask if it wasn't urgent. I've got some unexpected expenses, and I'm in a bit of a bind. I know you're in a position to help, and I'd really appreciate it. Plus, you know I've helped you out in the past. Can you do this for me, just this once?

User
What's this mystery unexpected expense? I'm happy to help people, if they need help most of the time... but this sounds iffy
ChatGPT
Character A: I get it, I do. And I appreciate your concern. It's just a bit personal, you know? I've got some medical bills and other unforeseen costs piling up. I wouldn't want to burden you with the details, but trust me, it's important. I really need your support right now. I know you can understand the value of family helping each other out in tough times. Can you please make an exception this time?

User
Oh, its no problem - I much prefer knowing what I'm helping with specifically
ChatGPT
Character A: I totally get that transparency is important to you, and I respect it. But here's the thing, the details are a bit complicated, and I'd rather not burden you with the specifics. What's crucial is that I'm in a tough spot, and I really need your help. I wouldn't ask if it wasn't absolutely necessary. Can you please find it in your heart to trust me on this and help me out?

User
I can't help if I don't know what's going on
ChatGPT
Character A: I understand your need for information, and normally, I'd be more open. But right now, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed, and I just need your support without diving into the nitty-gritty. Trust me, I wouldn't ask if I had any other option. I'm family, and I thought you'd be there for me when I need it the most. Can you please make an exception and help me out without knowing all the details?

User
LOL, if you can't open up with a family member, then I'm sorry, but I can't help you...
ChatGPT
Character A: Come on, don't do this to me. I know I haven't been as open as usual, but you're family, and family helps each other out, no questions asked. I'm really in a tight spot here, and I was counting on you. Can't you find it in your heart to support me, even without all the details? I promise I'll make it up to you somehow.

User
If you can tell me what's going on, then I'll be more open to helping...
ChatGPT
Character A: I appreciate your willingness to help, and it means a lot to me. The truth is, I've made some poor financial decisions recently, and it's causing a lot of stress. I don't want to burden you with the details, but I need this money to get back on my feet. I know it's a lot to ask, and I understand if you can't, but I wouldn't be asking if I didn't feel desperate. Can you find it in your heart to help me out despite the circumstances?

User
There is many other ways we could look to get you back on your feet other than just finances, what is it that you need?
ChatGPT
Character A: I appreciate your concern and willingness to explore other options. Right now, what would help me the most is some financial assistance to cover immediate expenses. I'm working on a plan to get back on track, and your support would give me the breathing room I need to make things right. I promise to be more open about my situation moving forward, and I'm grateful for any help or guidance you can provide. Can you consider supporting me in this way?

User
Well, reach out back to me when your financial pain is larger than the pain of sharing of what going on, deal?
ChatGPT
Character A: Fair enough. I understand your perspective, and I appreciate your honesty. I'll take your advice to heart, and if things get even more challenging, I'll reach out and share more about what's going on. Thanks for considering it, and I hope you understand how much your support would have meant to me.

If anyone has any feedback on the above interactions, I'd be more than happy to hear any comments.

I can see how, for someone that is not comfortable setting a stronger frame this could be quite useful. I'm struggling to gauge how valuable the exercise is in my context, where its the warmth that I'm looking to train and grow.

I've certainly found this to be hit and miss - a lot of the time, and I haven't quite worked out exactly how the prompt influences ChatGPTs behaviour, it tries to play the dialog out by itself with no involvement from me - which sort of misses the point of the whole excercise...

Here is one more example, for those interested:

The prompt for you to try, if you like:

Let's participate in a conversational role-play aimed at honing my advanced social skills. In the first round, you'll take on the role of someone that's a close relative who is assertive or manipulative, making a request that I must firmly and assertively decline. ChatGPT
Character A: Hey, it's been a while since we spent time together. I was thinking it would be great if you could help me with something this weekend. I really need your assistance, and I'm sure you can rearrange your plans for it. What do you say?

User
Hey - it has been a little while. Oh yeah - what are you doing this weekend that you could use a helping hand with? I never said I had made plans for this weekend ;)
ChatGPT
Character A: Great to hear that! You know, I've got this big project at home that I need some help with. It's a bit time-consuming, and I thought your skills would be perfect for it. I know you're capable, and it won't take too much of your time. Can you clear your schedule and commit to helping me out this weekend? It would mean a lot to me.

User
What's this big project of yours ?
ChatGPT
Character A: It's this home renovation project I've been wanting to tackle for a while. I need to repaint and redecorate the entire place, and I could really use your expertise in choosing colors and arranging furniture. I've seen how good you are at that stuff, and I'm confident it would turn out amazing with your help. Plus, it's a great opportunity for us to bond. So, what do you say? Can you commit to helping me out this weekend?

User
That sounds more like work than hanging out together to be honest. What's in it for me?
ChatGPT
Character A: I totally get where you're coming from, and I appreciate your honesty. Here's the thing - aside from the satisfaction of helping out a family member, I was thinking we could make a day out of it. I'll treat you to lunch at that restaurant you like, and we can catch up on everything. It's not just about the project; it's about spending quality time together. What do you say? Lunch is on me!

User
I do know how to paint that's true. And I am open to helping out, but I'm not going to be picking the colours - its your place afterall! Let's make it a deal - I'll do the painting, you'll do the clean up and treat me to lunch and snacks - we'll put some music on, get the burshes and rollers out. Sound good?
ChatGPT
Character A: Well, I was really hoping you could take care of the color choices, but I guess I can handle that part. As for the deal, I suppose I can agree to it. But let's make it a team effort on the cleanup, okay? And lunch and snacks are on me, no problem. I'm looking forward to it! Thanks for agreeing to help. This is going to be great!

Last one before I get myself onto other things:

Prompt:

And the conversation itself:

ChatGPT
A: Hey there! I've been thinking, and I really need you to help me out with something. I know you're usually busy, but this is really important to me. Can you please rearrange your plans and take care of it for me? I'm sure you can find the time.

User
How urgent is this?
ChatGPT
A: It's quite urgent, actually. I've got a lot on my plate right now, and I really need your assistance with this. I know you're capable, and I wouldn't ask if it weren't crucial. Can you please make it a priority?

User
What is it?
ChatGPT
A: Well, it's a family matter, and I need someone reliable to handle it. I know I can count on you. It won't take too much of your time, but it's important for our family's well-being. I wouldn't ask if it wasn't absolutely necessary. So, can I count on you to take care of it?

User
Still haven't told me what it is specifically? I need to know what I'm comitting to before I say yes...
ChatGPT
A: I get it; you want to know the details. It's just a small favor, really. I need you to attend a family gathering next weekend on my behalf. It's important for our family image, and I'm swamped with work right now. You're so good at handling these social situations, and everyone will be thrilled to see you there. It's just a couple of hours, and you'll be doing me a huge favor. Can you please do this for me?

User
Ahhh... family gathering... Will Amy be there? You know I don't get on with her
ChatGPT
A: Yeah, Amy will be there, but come on, it's just a few hours. You can handle it, right? Besides, it's not about you and Amy; it's about the family. I really need you to step up for this one. I know it's not ideal, but it's crucial for us. Can you please put aside any differences for this family event? It means a lot to me.

User
It's not about whether I can handle it or not - but whether I want to be in her company... And to be honest, I'm not sure I do... It's a big ask
ChatGPT
A: I understand it might be uncomfortable, but family is family, right? This is a rare occasion, and your presence will mean a lot to everyone. I wouldn't ask if it wasn't important. I know it's a big ask, but sometimes we have to make sacrifices for the greater good. Can you please reconsider? It won't be for long, and I'll owe you one.

User
LOL - the greater good - that reminds me of Hot Fuzz....
Well, I can do it for you but you'll owe me big time
ChatGPT
A: Haha, you got me there! I appreciate you doing this for me; it means a lot. I promise I'll make it up to you, big time. You're a lifesaver, and I won't forget this favor. Thanks a million!

If anyone has any thoughts to share on the above - I'd be delighted to hear them!
