Judge Power move, when I decide to help out, instead of thanking me Case Study

Hi Everyone,

I had recently visited a friends place and stayed at his place for a while, he had ordered groceries to be delivered to his place and he was out when it was delivered, I kept the order inside the freezer as it had some items which would have thawed had it been outside, my friend and one more of his friend return back to the house.

Friend: Is this all the items they delivered? I know I ordered more

Me: I put a couple of stuff in the freezer, they were thawing out.

Friend: Good Good ( A definite power move, he should have thanked me, this happens when the other friend is watching us)

In my head I know my friend pulled a power move and in that instant I was not sure how to check it, but after thinking about it, it seems so simple. i could have gone about it like this

Friend: Is this all the items they delivered? I know I ordered more

Me: I put a couple of stuff in the freezer, they were thawing out.

Friend: Good Good

Me: That's a strange way of saying thank you

If anyone has any opinions or feedback about the whole experience, would love to hear about it.

Thank You

Mav

Cheers Maverick.

I think your response is pretty good, I believe it's better said while smirking (as if saying gotcha motherfocker, can't trick me) otherwise you can break rapport.

Thank you Power Duck, the smirk  would be a great addition,  a non verbal reply in there as well .

Hi Maverick,

exploring the range of possible responses, I see these additional possibilities:

  • jokingly surface the fact that he's apparently asking you to take care of his house in exchange for letting you stay there:

You: I'm taking good care of your house AND of your groceries (smile)

  • surface whether he's asking if you've eaten the stuff:

Friend: Is this all the items they delivered? I know I ordered more

Me: Just ate those - soooo goood, thank you... Just joking, they're in the freezer.

  •  use the James Bond technique for when someone doesn't thank:

Friend: Good Good ( A definite power move, he should have thanked me, this happens when the other friend is watching us)

You: You're welcome (smile)

Hi Bel,

These are some responses that never occurred to me,  I can see these responses checking the power moves while maintaining rapport,  thank you for sharing these kick-ass responses.
