Look the part to increase your power & influence

An example that proves the rule right, but going against the rule:

This professor doesn't look the part.

He can still garner the support of those who side with him.
Maybe even embolden the leftists to support him right because he looks queerish.

But he will utterly fail to influence anyone who's politically opposed -a challenging task in any case- and, crucially, those are on the fence.
