New flagship TPM book (2022): what cover do you like best?

Which book cover do you like best?
#1.
#2.
#3.
None.

By the way, this book cover design project has been quite the journey. We initially started with these two looks from the team:

I liked them both, but I decided that I liked the one on the left best and the color of the one on the right.

More than these options though, I also wanted to see a few looks that were heavily inspired by the TPM logo.

Unluckily, when we went down that road, the designers came up with looks that felt more like posters than book covers:

Still, I felt that the idea of applying the red to the blue cover came out great (see #1 at the top of this thread).

The only thing was, I wanted to see more varieties of looks to choose from. So, I gave this feedback:

This was the example I shared with the design team to pull from:

Which led to the #3 you see now. And, that's probably why I went for #1:

  • It felt the most like an original design: far less inspired by my feedback (I didn't want to go with something I felt I had too much of a hand in — taking away from the creative expertise of the designers who are also book marketing experts)
  • It felt like the last two looks reflected my feedback (almost) exactly: which felt like a "non-thinking designer" outcome to me because I wanted to see their creative opinions at work
  • Personal creative opinions: #1 did seem like the best design out of the three to me, hence why I voted for it

So, before we settle on #3, I've requested a couple more looks with hardly any feedback, fully encouraging the creative freedom of the designers.

Let's see what they come up with.

Thank you for this backstory, Ali, quite fascinating (and for the great work you've done on this) !

The last couple of designs I requested seem to be moving away from what we're looking for:

So, based on the results from our poll, it seems that we already have our winner :).

Yeah, that arrow on target might the best most abused consultant PowerPoint type of design :).

Before we declare a winner though, I'd like to wait for some more data.

Right now, at around 1.647 impressions:

  • Design 2 has 0.73% conversion rate:

  • Design 3 0.54%

And #1 is at 0.41%.

The numbers are not yet big enough to be very telling in my opinion.

Plus, the current test is not perfect.

I want to run a test now with picture only.
Right now I think the picture on mobile is down below the page (below the fold).

If you have the version of #3 based on Growfast's feedback Ali, which sounded like great feedback, I'm going to test that one.

Awesome! Let's circle back when we have more data then.

The updated version of #3 is in this post.

If you want me to send you the file(s) via email, let me know.

Yes, let's do it with the original files so the image quality is higher.

Update: numbers updated on 05 March

-----

We had 2 tests running.

One was with a pop-up where the picture showed up first on mobile.
And another one was the "exit intent", where the picture showed down the fold on mobile.

Results.

POP-UP

  1. Number 1: 0.46%
  2. Number 2: 0.7%
  3. Number 3: 0.46%

Number 2:

Number 3:

EXIT INTENT

However, in the exit-intent 2 and 3 are closer.

  1. Number 1 0.46%
  2. Number 2 0.52%
  3. Number 3 0.61% (note: it was the old version being tested with the title on the right)

QUALITATIVE

In this poll we have 12 votes, and 8 for #2.

RESULT

Number one is out.

Between number 2 and number 3 it might be more up to choice.

OFF-TOPIC

This experiment also shows how science can be misleading without logic because small variations in the experiment can lead to very different results.

Reason why this website espouses a three-pillars method instead of relying on papers and experiments.
