Persuasion by mocking: an example
This is from Martin Seligman's book "The Hope Circuit".
He says:
Word of our work was spreading. I had been offered an assistant professorship at Harvard. My chairman, Harry Levin, mocked the offer: “Every Jewish boy wants to be at Harvard.” He hit the target and shamed me, and so I turned Harvard down.
I think it's a great example.
The chairman knew the pull and attractiveness of the big name "Harvard".
And instead of convincing Seligman of what he could offer if he stayed, he sought to shame Seligman for wanting the big name, for going after the bling.
