Stranger Throws Insult After I Receive a Compliment From Someone

I had gone to Starbucks and was going to sit down outside with my coffee and pastry.
Number 1 guys said: I like your boots those are really cool.
Me: "Thank you". (As I continued to find a seat eat my pastry and drink my coffee)
Number 2 guy: No the shoes do not look nice!!!
My proposed solution: I said to him "chill out". But I did not want to really engage this guy in a verbal battle as this would have been very reactive of me which in the past makes me look very bad. As a result he just kept talking shit and I ignored him.
Number 2 guy: OK OK but I am just trying to help you man!!!
