The "If he/she can do it I can do it" mindset

Hello,

Based on these 2 videos:

I absorbed the "If he/she can do it I can do it" mindset.

  • If my friend can be good at rock climbing so can I
  • If my friend can lose 8 kg so can I
  • If Lucio can be great at social and power dynamics, so can I
  • If my peers can do intensive care and emergency medicine so can I
  • If some guy on the Internet can get a 6-pack, so can I
  • If some guy can get a hot blonde girl, so can I
  • If I (I'm the he) stopped smoking twice I can do it again
  • If some people can go to bed early so can I
  • If some people get rid of their addictions so can I

So it's all about the self-confidence. That is the confidence in the self to achieve/learn something. It's not about the confidence in the acquired skills (experience). It's the confidence in one's ability to acquire the skills. It's one's confidence in one's ability to adapt and learn.

So it's about setting realistic goals, strategy, focus, perseverance, feed-back loops on what worked and did not. We all know that.

As a side note, the thing that I found challenging in self-development is the fact that every time one "grows/evolve" their mind, then one must re-visit the old concepts as their flavour/colour has changed.

As Heraclitus said: "No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man."

So when we change one aspect of our mind, sometimes it can be a bit challenging to re-arrange properly the other aspects. An example is like when you move out from a smaller apartment to a larger one. You still have the same stuff that you brought in from the old apartment. You will have got rid of old stuff, bought new stuff but the majority of the stuff in your new apartment comes from your old apartment. So far so good. But now you have to re-arrange it in the new apartment. I feel it's the same with "mind expansion". One grows one's mind and what was familiar and normal (in this example: finding the toilets in the dark, finding the toothbrush, doing the dishes), one has to find a new process to do the same thing. (Off-topic: for humour reference, see George Carlin).

I feel it's the same with the whole "setting goals, strategy, achieving". When one changes, one has to find new ways to go about it even if the process and ideas are the same. They feel different. One idea that was very helpful is now not as helpful. One habit that was very helpful is now not helpful anymore. So yeah it's about change.

When we change, the way we go about change changes. It's like buying a new car: the shift stick is still there, the pedals are still there, the steering wheel is still there but it's a different feel. I think it's the same with mindsets: when you have a new mindset same concepts feel different.

Yep, great catch, John.

I see that as one of the major foundations of (mental) self-empowerment.

It's also part of one of TPM's most foundational articles "making of the ubermensch", where it's better fleshed out (and which I should now retitle "making of the eagle" maybe :).

Also on top of the ability of acquiring the skill, the mindset stays even if you can't acquire the skill.
Which may sound nonsense empty self-help, but it's different than "I can do it no matter what". It's about knowing that X person was born with X trait that helped him there, and next life or next universe if you have that trait, you can do it too.

And in this life, you're still equally good because you're probably better suited than that person in doing more/better/more effectively in some other fields.

Fire post, thanks.

I like the “next universe, next life” perspective and the whole reasoning.

I agree with the renaming the way you proposed it. SEO worthy and sexier.
