- the manipulator denies any wrongdoing and possibly blame you [blames]
- To reject, minimize, ignore, or even criticize and making fun [make]
- you’ll be you in the streets [you’ll be in]
- trance is a highly pleasing stated that can be [state]
- highjack the high-power judge [hijack]
A comment on the section “Justification & Rationalization”:
a common example I encountered is the manipulator doing something purposely embarrassing to the recipient in public and then, when called out, justifying it because of the manipulative person being “insecure” or "not socially skilled". “Insecurity” or "lack or social skills" is the cover for the disrespect.
A comment on the section on “Negative reinforcement”:
While the examples seem of people saying it "out loud", in my experience manipulators usually use this covertly, ie without explaining to the mark what they’re doing.
Example: my former boss used to angrily call employees on the phone, with a distressing tone, 10 times in an hour with a manufactured emergency, whenever an employee would take “time off”, precisely during such time off.
This was done even when the same boss had previously agreed to give the employee such time off.
From his perspective, having the employee unconsciously associate “time off” with “work emergencies” and “anger and distress” was more effective than saying out loud to the employee he couldn’t take time off for a medical visit, a funeral, a marriage…
Had he said that, the boss could have come across as an insensitive boss.
But, if he instead agreed - and then an emergency happened… what fault did he have?
And the fact that the “negative conditioning” was outside the conscious awareness of the mark likely made it stronger.
It was a definite feeling of dread whenever one had to take time “off”…
