When networking, to assess their needs, don't ask, "Are you hitting all of your goals?"

This was a suggestion made by Dr. Ivan Misner and Brian Hilliard in their book, Networking Like a Pro.

And I think it can work as a strategic decision to save time:

  • If their answer is “no”: then ask them what their goals are and what it would take for them to reach them.
  • If their answer is “yes”: then consider that they may be letting their ego get in the way of any fruitful/productive discussion surrounding how you—or anyone else—may be able to help (and be willing to walk away).

However, I personally don’t use this question (and, at a glance, wouldn't consider it the most effective question to ask) because most people don’t like admitting to others that they’re not achieving what they once said they would, so it can be ineffective with some personalities.

Happy to read any thoughts and feedback.

Yeah, sounds a lot like a power move question and like the asker is vying for a judge position over you.

There are ways to achieve the same goal though with a more power protecting format.
