Would you like a couple of minutes to reconsider that reply

Over at a mates yesterday.  He s a program manager so fairly senior.  He was speaking approvingly of some boss who says this to his staff.  Example he gave was subordinate said 2 weeks to do a task and got it done in a few days.

So obviously he s a keep the foot on the throat old school guy. My friend likes that judgmental style.

If I was the manager I d praise for the fast turnaround and ask what have we learned for our next estimate.

So my defence would be along the same lines (with some PU romanticising):

"Yes I spoke to Harsha and Jane and saw we needed some updates to the report.  Normally this would take 2 weeks as per my initial estimate.  But I worked out I could save a few days by updating one of our existing reports.  And that will give us time to show it to rob and tweak before we show it to Exec."

Now my reply assumes a few things bounced my way and I have a good news story to tell.

What s people s thoughts on a more generic defence if you were unprepared and he put you on the spot in a meeting?
