Yes I would definitely say it's a generalized preference for men with more wealth. Some women like to say they don't care in groups, but then if you are close meet them for a coffee just you and them and they all at least consider it as a plus. I think it's like you say: it's a universal preference but how much it matters varies depending on person and culture/socioeconomic background.
