Elon Musk's Social Climbing

Lucio shared a video on Tony Robbins social climbing.

I happened to chance upon a short video of Elon Musk laughing at an interviewer's question on Tesla's competitor BYD in 2011.

Interviewer: Although there's competitors now ramping up, as you are familiar with BYD which is also on the West Coast. I think they are ramping up production of their electric vehicles. Warren Buffet owns 10% stake in that.

Elon Musk: (laughs condescendingly)

Interviewer: Why do you laugh?
BYD is trying to compete.
Why do you laugh?

Elon Musk: Have you seen their cars? (in haughty tone)

Interviewer: I have seen their cars. Yes.
In fact, in the Berkshire Hathaway meeting, I saw their cars.

Elon Musk: Yeah

Interviewer: Tell me why you're laughing.

Elon Musk: Erm

Interviewer: You don't seem them as a competitor?

Elon Musk: No

Interviewer: Why is that? They offer a lower price point.

Elon Musk: I don't think they have a great product.

It's not respectful to the interviewer and comes across as haughty because he dismisses his competitor backed by Warren Buffet as a threat.

But many entrepreneurs have some degree of delusion about their own product or service.
After all, one needs to believe your product or service is the best for the best individuals to follow you.

The interviewer also made the mistake of chasing him for answers.
I think she could have said:

Interviewer: Now you make me very curious.
On a serious note, what do you think about BYD?

But sometimes it's good to make people feel powerful in an interview because they may actually talk more.
Though chasing for an answer doesn't come across very well for the interviewer.

Fast forward to 2021, some people say BYD is doing better than Tesla:
