Would be curious to hear what you think about this:

  • Current Headline (56): Naive Self-Help: 10 Most Dangerous BS To Avoid
  • New Headline (90): 10 "Useful" Self-Help Ideas That Are Actually Naive

Here I like the Current Headline more.
It may be related to the second one (the New Headline) subtly framing the reader as “probably having fallen for BS already” (or at least that’s how I read it!).

Thank you, everyone!

Gave it a whirl, Transitioned, and here's what came back:

  • Current Headline (54): Teacher-Pupil Frames: Why (Some) Teachers Are Takers
  • New Headline (84): Why Some Teachers You See Are Takers (Teacher-Pupil Frames)
  • Alternative Headline (75): How To Spot Teachers That Are Takers (Teacher-Pupil Frames)

Edit:

Noticed that Bel and I posted at the same time, so changed "both" to "everyone".

Quick update on this:

I adopted several of Ali's suggestions -some with just some slight modifications, and some because they needed to be briefer to fit on Google's results-.

Will be interesting to circle back in a few months and see if/how CTR has changed.

As I'm writing some lessons on networking, I wanted to include Lucio's article on what to do when people make you wait. And, I think Monster Insight's headlines are great for giving a succinct description of what that article is about.

So, I ran it through the analyzer too:

  • Current Headline (50): What To Do When Someone Makes You Wait: 7 Steps To Restore Power
  • New Headline (87): How To Re-Empower Yourself Quickly When Someone Makes You Wait

The second headlines makes more sense indeed and sounds better, in fewer words.

Consider though that "re-empower" is more of a niche keyword.

The person who was left waiting for the first time didn't know what to do, or even the person who was waiting and felt something off, but couldn't put his finger on what it was, has no idea it was about power dynamics.
So if he were to read a headline saying "re-empower yourself" and one saying "what to do when they make you wait", he may end up clicking on the second because the first one doesn't really talk to him.

That was the original reasoning behind the first headline -and not even saying it's correct, just sharing what what the rationale-.

Thanks for sharing your rationale, Lucio, I agree with it.

So, here's another idea:

  • Current Headline (50): What To Do When Someone Makes You Wait: 7 Steps To Restore Power
  • Alternative Headline (93): When Someone Makes You Wait, This is the Powerful Way to Deal With Them

Nice, a heck of a lot better.

I went to amend it actually, but it was longer than the viewable limit (there's a character cut-off for Google SERP).

Hi Lucio,

Do you happen to have any updates on how those new headlines have been performing?

I followed this same experimental approach for our latest article:

  • (54) The Attitudes And Applications Of Healthy Nihilism
  • (87) How to Use Nihilism to Your Advantage for More Freedom

Would be curious if there's any data that proves this approach is worth continuing.

Hello Ali,

I didn't check that.

But I believe it generally does make sense to look into title optimization for new articles.
