How Could I Have Handled This Power Showdown

I'd appreciate some feedback on a power showdown I had almost a year ago.
In this post, I'll try to detail what I would have said now if it happened again.
Context: This is between me and the president of an association in university. The university had organized a pool event, which the association was in charge with. The guy in question is a student and occupies the role of president, although the whole thing is a university event. It's one of those student associations in university.
The issue: I was with a group of students at the event which included a socially awkward guy, who was friends with me only. Mid-event I decide to bail with my girlfriend. The event was boring and everyone was spread out around random pool tables. Some other students had already left.

One hour later I receive a text:
President: Hey man, this is John, president of X association. I noticed you left early. Why?
Me (what I actually said): Hey John yes I know haha wassup man, I left because I had an emergency (that was a lie)
Me (what I think I should have said): Hey man
President: Alright, Imma be straight up. I just thought it was kind of weird that you left early. You had Tom with you (socially awkward guy) and when you left, we saw him playing pool alone. It looked kinda pathetic. As president of X association, I wanted to see everyone enjoy themselves. You could have at least had the decency to inform me before leaving. Because of you, Tom was left alone and it goes against what my cabinet wanted for this event.
(his tone was very aggressive. It was a voice note)
Me (what I actually said): Are you accusing me for Tom playing all by himself?
Me (what I should have said): Well dude, everyone was on his own at this event. And as it's always been the case, we come and go since it's a very casual thing. It's always been that way.
President: Don't forget that I AM YOUR PRESIDENT. Full stop. You owe me the respect of letting me know.
Me (what I said): I'm sorry man I'll let you know next time.
This issue sprung a series of reputation issues and as I you may guess, the dude always acted like he was above me after that.
I tried setting things even and succeeded somehow.
I'd really appreciate your responses guys :)
P.S. I wrote a first post on the forum but I can't find it. And the dumbass that I am forgot the title. Is there a way i can track all the posts I created? Thank you :)
