How to handle the case where a client originally presented to me by a colleague later contacts me alone for new work

There is another approach to this that I am reading in a book:
to politely refuse re-engagement by the client that was referred by another lawyer, and tell him to go to his original contact (ie the other lawyer), who will then decide whether to work on the case alone or reinvolve you or another lawyer.
I think this may be even more honest and conducive to a good relationship between colleagues than asking permission to the originating lawyer.
Assuming this happens to me again, I will probably consider this approach before others.

It's something worth trying to as an experiment, I agree.
