Any self-development is done, in part, to achieve goals that often include other people, or society.
So if you didn't care at all, then you wouldn't even need to work on yourself -or on anything-.
However, caring too much becomes harmful when it's too much, or when it curtails your freedom, your mental well-being, and your ability to pursue certain courses of action.
