The power/warmth matrix.

Leave aside that the pictures and colors are misplaced (non-thinking designer).

What do you think about the:

  • Pictures
    • Homeless for "low power / low warmth": the homeless doesn't fully convey that he is also low warmth and disliked. But I can't think of any graphics that could easily convey that
  • Examples or not?: I'm thinking if it's better to only leave the pictures without descriptions and examples (examples might then be in the lesson / article)

Homeless guy is good for low power and low warmth. (Guy sitting on the streets shouting with a crying face seems good)

I think the guy with the whip seems better for High power and low warmth (Whip shows high power and low warmth kind of like the slavers)

The picture for High power and High warmth looks like a guy slouching and the frowning face shows sadness. I feel a guy with a crown on his head seems better.

One of the main goals of TPM and PU isn't only to expand the power dynamics discipline, but to help teach it to others. And, I think that's where pictures can be very helpful.

And, personally, the examples and descriptions were very helpful for me when I was first started out in PU (as a pretty clueless beginner).

  • Low power, high warmth: Looks good. The "Mr. Nice Guy" title says it all, so I don't think the picture needs to be any more detailed.
  • High power, high warmth: I agree with Growfast here. This graphic could easily be the King in the new quadrant for the concept of effort/returns infographic. And, that King could be surrounded by people who adore him.
  • Low power, low warmth: Easy fix would be to make it an angry homeless man. If I were the designer, I'd make him shouting and standing up (so he looks more confrontational) with lines emanating from his head to make him look frustrated/agitated. And, I'd probably put the homeless man in a tattered coat and unkempt beard.
  • High power, low warmth: Perhaps an angry CEO barking orders (can be done with a speech bubble that says, "Get to work, now!")

One analogy at the top of my mind for low power, low warmth would be a violent criminal/psychopath behind bars.

A quick Google search brings this up:

A more common day-to-day example would be alpha-male posturers.
Low warmth and relatively low power.

Not sure how to represent this but googled "bragging" and this comes up:

Thoughts?

I think the image kinda of captures the anger without power, but the coin feels now superfluous.

I think Low Power - Low Warmth looks better without the coin. Then it will be more uniform and in sync with other pictures. (Since other pictures don't have a mini-picture accompanying like low power and low warmth)

Yeah, a few thoughts:

  • The King looks more likes a Jester: because his crown is pushed down over his eyes like it's a child playing King with his friends. The crown certainly helps him look like a King, but the way he's wearing it coupled with that smile doesn't help him come across as a King that's taken seriously.
  • The Frustrated Chump needs a new accessory: the bowl with the coin doesn't work. Better, would be a cup with a dollar sign on it so people know he's begging for money to be put in the cup. And, bonus points for the designer if he can craft the homeless person to be holding the cup.
  • The High-Value Taker is missing context: to underline that it's a high-power individual behaving low-warmth, perhaps it'd be better if the man with the whip was dressed to look like a CEO whipping one of his hard-working employees who's on their hands and knees. (Value-taking behavior like that would certainly justify the box being colored in a bold red as well.)

Edit:

Another potential option would be to make the High-Value Taker a mean, angry King.

Content-wise looks good in my opinion.

I think, as you say, removing the coin would help.

I feel that

  • Warmth should be on the horizontal axis
  • Power should be on the vertical axis
  • High-quality man should be on the top left-hand corner.
I feel that this would stand out visually more.

With power on the vertical axis, high-quality man and high-value taker are on the top row.
Visually, it feels more powerful. Consistent with those roles having more power.

Weird that the designer doesn't have the intuition for this.
Or maybe we are biased because we have been immersed in this website's content for too long.

Maybe you've been using the same designer for infographics.
And it's good enough given the price range.

Edited: Looks like I posted at the same time as Ali

Yes, it's near the bottom of the price range.

Don't expect much thinking or genius ideas, but if you give him everything, he'll polish it just fine.

So if you don't have any idea, not your guy.

But if you already have a clear idea, or if it's something simple like a matrix, then great value for the money.
