Levels of boss/superior approval: judge power moves

Hello TPM community,

in reference to my posts:

And Transitioned's post

We talked about how it's a boss/superior who can judge someone else's performance. My conclusion was that if you're the superior, it's important to have the last word even if it sounds childish. Example: if the subordinate goes: "Perfect!" when given instructions/explanations one goes "Very good" or something along those lines.

What I noticed is that there are levels to it and it can come across as too domineering/too friendly depending on the context. Let's explore these, from more dominant to less dominant. The context is when a task has been accomplished/reported and/or when an explanation is given. There is a silence so a leadership gap. The person using it first takes the leadership. The subordinates should say: "thanks" or "ok thanks" or "ok I got it" something like that. Acknowledgment rather than approval.

1. Very good/good

These two in my minds are very similar. This is judging the task/performance. They are quite dominant. If a friend says he has bought beers for the party, it will come across as too dominant.

2. Ok

This one has the specificity of being low investment. It's also a typical bridge: "Ok, and the next patient how is he?"

3. Perfect

I talked about this one a lot. It's very popular where I live among subordinates as a power move in order to re-empower themselves. The disadvantage is that it can piss of the boss. I know it does it to me. It's a good one as it is quite positive so it's a good bread-and-butter if used in the right context. It validates someone's work as not needing anymore modification. So good ego candy as well.

4. Super

This one is more with friends as it is more informal/familiar.

And we have all the other ones: "wonderful", "that's right", "correct", "that's fine", etc. This is not an exhaustive list.

Happy to know if you have any comments on this.
