Negotiating a request with another Team when you don't have a WIIFM
Put this under negotiation because Matthew and I had discussed a similar situation here.
I have this IT systems project with 3 main execs on the big bosses committee. Two are from the business and they just want it in as fast as possible. The other lady is from IT and she is pure CYA. Wants whatever is easy for IT and couldn't care less about timelines.
Her head Architect seems to be her apologist. He 'me toos' everything she says with great arguments.
The architect on my project is on leave for 3 weeks. We have to get our design signed off before we can start building. The design goes to this IT committee for approval.
What I would like to argue is we get conditional approval for the first part of the design which is simple and low risk.
And get the Vendor building that while we work on the design and approval for the second more complicated bit. That's the situation.
What I'm thinking is I just politely ask this guy if its worth it and if its possible to get somebody else to evaluate this while his guy is away on holiday. Short and sweet - two liner email - just throwing the idea out there.
He will come back with a million arguments why it can't be done. And I will say no worries of course they know best.
I'm not normally defeatist but given his boss doesn't care about this project I can't see the answer as being anything but 'NO' so I don't see any point in annoying them and wasting political capital. I have asked the question for the 2 biz 'go faster' execs and IT blocked us which they are well used to. Happy to hear other people's thoughts.
