Push-notifications: removed it from ThePowerMoves.com

Maybe you had noticed that there was a small bell-shaped icon on this website at the bottom of the screen.

I had been running an experiment with push notifications, and some people did sign up every day.
In the end, more than 550 signed up.

However, those people were not clicking much on those notifications.
The highest was a 3% click rate. And the average.. Well, it didn't allow me to check the average, probably because it wasn't a very flattering number. But my last posts were all sub 2%.
Since at higher than 2.000 subscribers it was becoming a paid service and since it was slowing the website down, I decided to get rid of it.

And interesting experiment, but in the end I deemed it wasn't worth to keep up.

Hi Lucio,

For me at least it's unfortunate that this feature is not available. I'll tell you my usecase:

I've learned a lot from TPM(thank you!). However, I only read extensively in December 2020 and December 2021 because that's when I had a lot of free time. The rest of the year I'm occupied with my job and other stuff. I'm sometimes thinking "It would be interesting to read and post on the TPM forum or read the latest TPM articles". However, at that point I'm on my phone and postpone reading TPM to when I'm on my laptop and then I forget about it.

I believe push notifications would make me more engaged. I can't generalise to others though.

I don't know anything about Wordpress, however I saw there are various plugins with a free tier.

Since at higher than 2.000 subscribers it was becoming a paid service and since it was slowing the website down

If the problem is only technical, I can try to help. I work in software and it would be fun for me to have a go at this for a day.

However, if you think the feature doesn't make sense, I respect your decision.

Cheers

Thank you for this note and for the offer, bluesky!

I think push might a nice to have, but not crucial for TPM for a few reasons:

  1. Evergreen content can be consumed at any time: TPM is more into timeless and evergreen articles than anything that needs a "check this out before it's too late" type of push
  2. Subscribers' email: If there is some important article or really good new resource that it's worth checking out, I usually send an email. If there is an important new article without an email yet, it's often because it's still an early draft
  3. Automated pushes may push "just OK" articles and waste the audience's time: some reviews in here are for good, but not great resources. Some are criticism of "to avoid" resources (The Secret, etc.). I don't think anyone should be bothered with those, and automated pushes may end up pushing time-wasters, and the last thing I want is to waste the audience's time

Edit:

4. The best will find its way into PU, so anyone that uses PU as guiding resource may not strictly need any other article
