Yeah I agree with you. I think you're spot on. The issue here is that I think that's the most respect she's able to have but you're right.
I do the same as you do with my mother. I did not even tell her I got my pediatrician degree as I'm sure she will take some of my success for her.

I'm not seeing the first therapist any longer because I find the therapist himself to be manipulative (I sense that we wants me to be dependent on him).
His advice has been useful though so I have to give credit to him for that.

Yeah contrarily to what most people think manipulators are quite prevalent in healthcare. It's because it's a field with power and status. So they infiltrate it for these reasons. I think you were 100% right to get away from this person and that you learned from him anyway. I also learned a lot from manipulators like my sisters, friends or colleagues. These people are not 100% bad or 100% takers.
