What would be the best frame techniques and style of dominance for law enforcement?

What would be the best frame techniques and style of dominance for law enforcement? Especially against a person that's antagonistic or non compliant?

Hello Leaft,

Usually, in police courses, they stress:

  • Never take things personally (learn to distance yourself, this is mental power)
  • Only escalate gradually, remind them they have the option of turning things more collaboratively
  • Provide an "easy way out" for them to save face (for example: if you don't, we'll be forced to handcuff, or you can collaborate and we can go the friendly way, and we much prefer the latter)

All of them are valid.

From a framing point of view, the collaborative frame first stands here, too:

We are here to provide a public service and make streets and life safer for everyone, including for you. Help us in this difficult task by collaborating with us, and everyone will win"

And start with that collaborative approach first.
Starting with a friendly:

Good day sir! How are you doing today

Will go a long way to set a more positive frame, and that will help to turn much initial resistance into collaboration.

Of course, you will always encounter hard cases.
A good book by a police offer and later trainer that goes more into the hard cases is this:

Thank you Lucio.

Cheers mate.

And by the way, those collaborative frames are exactly what would be needed these days.

Some police forces around the world do not have the best reputation because they sometimes approach simple traffick stops with confrontational frames or with a frame of "I got power, you shut and obey".

Those are unneeded because it's already obvious who's got power.
Policemen represent the law, are armed, can call backups, and resisting them means going against the law.
It's an unneeded overkill to approach people with a frame of "I got power, you just do as I say" when that frame is already set by the very nature of the relationship.

More collaborative frames could help mend this huge rift we are seeing these days.
It's far too easy these days for idiots and thugs to use policemen as scapegoats for their personal anger.

if you're an officer, the best frame technique would be to get a new frame and a more interesting way to ovulate your time.
