Small doings

Yeah, great one John, one of those posts that would need a double like.

There can be some merit in that initial denial and you may use to turn it into fuel. But ultimately you want to look deeper, accept the pain and anger, and move through it (not in the sense of "resignation", of course, but accepting it first may be the best way to reach that point where you can truly laugh it off).

Thanks! :)

Its an interesting one.  And what works is going to be different for different people.  I always remind myself we re not surgeons nobody died today - in IT we can say that. That reminds me to not take myself and others too seriously.  I do remember a study on heart attack survivors.  The ones who repressed it and got on with life had better 5 year survival rates than the ones who got counseling. So repression may be a natural defence mechanism.  You have to recognise repeated useless patterns of behaviour.  But I don't think anyone here is going to have any deficiency in self evaluation.

It is! It's a huge topic!

100%

Yeah, I don't think anybody here thought nor said that :)

Thanks John interesting table obviously from the field of psychology.  You always come up with interesting angles. I m assuming on ego protection mechanisms.  My point was more around the 'Dr Phil' culture that talking things out is always a good thing.  That study showed that there were biological benefits that went beyond psychology.  I m onboard with the empirical approach in psychology.  I m skeptical of the various theories of self and personality.  Just don't find they have much predictive power.

I didn't understand what you d highlighted.  I didn't state  anybody had said or thought anything.   My point was a personal one reminding myself not to suffer 'analysis paralysis'.  I m in my journal so my posts here are primarily working notes. I.e. it's my me me me space

As I am an analyst by trade I ve always got to remind myself to look for default actions, shortcuts, tactics that implement the general approaches, timebox anything that keeps it practical.

Otherwise because of my training and nature i can easily succumb to mental masturbation.

So....the year in retrospective and then the new big push:

Retrospective

Positives:

  1. Survived another year of contracting and banked good cash
  2. Worked as PM and BA so leaves me flexible in market.
  3. Learnt ERP and Retail and when I was back in the market that got me a lot of interviews.  Had to turn down another job offer today because they were too poor.
  4. Fulfilled a number of roles in the last year (survived longer than other contractors) and learnt new tricks - that project where I had to code a production app and used an upwork guy for half of it worked well.  Business loved it, solved a real ops problem and its still being used 9 moths later.  And it was a win for my team because it freed up a senior Dev to work on the mega program which we were getting pressure to kick resources into.
  5. 2 good references in place - Boss said nice things at my going away  - 'said I was like a swiss army knife and when he gave me projects he didn't need to worry about them anymore'
  6. Already landed a new job in wealth mgmt on good day rate (industry I've been trying to crack for years)

Negatives:

  • Got hit in program cutbacks  - lost job - wah!  But lasted 18 months so respectable contracting stint.
  • Did do better with my politics on the fly but SERIOUSLY need to practice and pull off a minimum 10% upgrade to be ready for those wealth guys (the pinnacle of politics in my industry)
  • Don't know a thing about wealth management so need to get BUSY!

Holidays Plan

I was smart this time on how I setup the new job.  I start this side of Xmas.  Have 3 days then off to holidays.  So I get to survey the landscape - there will lots of onboarding stuff being a big wealth company so nobody will expect me to deliver anything.   Focus on good first impressions, intelligent questions and gathering intel on people and projects.   Got e 2.5 weeks to do my politics upgrade and learn wealth (and I've already figured out how to do that :-)  And I've warned g/f that if I need it I'll study poolside in Bali too (although I really hope not!) - she loves tours so if needed I'll pop her on a tour bus.

Needed Doings

  1. Writeup mores scripts - focus is on meetings - start practicing
  2. Go through PPFM book and use to structure meeting responses and reword for collaborative frames
  3. Purchase and train in wealth mgmt software
  4. Research digital transformation (starting with the wealthtech books) - maybe do the screen design course too if its dense and cheap enough.

Rock on, Kevin!

Sounds like it was a great year, with more in store to come, and with a great plan to make it happen.
