U-turn reframes and other examples for succeeding against the odds

Hi guys,

you may know the video in PU where some guy walking by beats an highly situational advantaged Michael Moore (though it goes a little too fast for me to fully appreciate it).

Another similar example was Trump and the sexual assault allegations. How that did go could really be called an U-turn, and Lucio has analyzed Trumps moves in depht here and on youtube.

And if we look at this TPM-article, it basically shows how to precede after a negative in-person impression, which is quite a bad starting position.

And this video is about pickup as a homeless guy, and that’s a terrible starting position for sure. (But of course one has to be very sceptic about the content, as there is much incencitive to simply fake it, and I wouldn’t take it too serious)

I’m looking for more (plausible) examples of situations where someone started for whatever reason with bad or even terrible odds but succeeded anyway.

Especially impressive are fast U-turns, as over time it’s more natural and even expected that things will change, but those are still interesting too and of course more realistic.

I find them particularly insightful because one hasn’t much room for mistakes and has to be absolutely on spot and precise with ones’ behaviour, which is especially valuable for an analysis. Of course one has to take into account that these are “against the odds” and therefore unlikely, but interesting precisely because of that.

If you know more of those, please share.

How about Tony Robbins here:

Yeah, I agree with you though, those U-turns are very interesting because they're extreme.
There is much to learn from extremes. Plus, extremes happen rarely in life, so you will learn from events that you couldn't often experience yourself (which is also the downside by the way, one should also learn what's most likely to happen to him, including the humdrum of daily relationship communication, professional frame control at work, etc.).

Have you also checked out the other thread on power reversal?
They are also similar examples of U-turn frames.

The Power reversals thread has indeed some overlap, and the cop videos are hilarious.

I may should have clarified a bit more, because I thought more about -having to climb out of a hole- so to speak, maybe even with the halo-effect working against you, with U-turns as very condensed examples, but you can merge the threads if they seem to similar to you, I don’t mind and don’t want to clutter.

And this is not a good start or good source for the basics for sure, though I wanted to look a bit more at the naked “core” of powerful and effective behaviour, and damagecontrol as well, and it seems best to do that specifically with examples of people in clear negative positions (-15 instead of 0 or +5) that are able to turn them around, because -as you proved with the example of Jonny Depp-, being already in a powerful position is a lot more forgiving.

So examples in hard, “against all odds”, unforgiving situations where the halo effect works initially against them, that still made a complete U-turn eventually (the quicker the more impressive) sound interesting to me, because you need heavy skills for climbing out of that hole.

And that’s the other thing about this, how to actually climb out of a deep negative effectively, as it is a position that may happen very quickly and catch you off guard.

Lets construct an example

F has to take the overcrowded tram and is therefore forced to be very close to people while noticing that his body odor is strong and not at all ideal after such a long day and has no way to change that.

Bad position, shouldn’t at all happen, but what could F do if at that exact time he notices his absolute dream women sits right next to him, and he only has one chance in that huge city.

An ideal U-turn could be something like, “man to operate all day really has it’s downsides, I hope it’s not too bad” while sniffing his shirt followed by “but he will fully recover, that’s what counts, isn’t it”.

Though as well as that might work, that’s only an option for a tiny minority of people.

And if you don’t have that option how to handle it equally effective? Is it even possible if you were actually unemployed for example?

One really has to put ones' skills together there – and if you train triathlons, you won’t have problems walking up some stairs.

Conceptiully it looks not too hard:

Damage control with surfacing while also shining maximal positive traits through and connecting at a deeper layer. But it is quite challenging.
