My Journey to Power

Quote from John Freeman on December 12, 2023, 12:10 pm

I had an interview for a regional hospital as an attending physicians (still pediatrics).

I aced it. It was (almost) flawless. As usual I prepared with Transitioned’s article (along with Lucio’s mindset) and my preparation file. This one contains

I was both authentic and strategic. I could say authentically why I wanted to work there (chief is an intensivist and interested in patient safety: I researched it it’s the strategic part) and I was authentic with it: I’m interested in these and working with people who have those skills.

I asked relevant questions at the end.

In short I was prepared.

Something I may have underestimated in the past is that our past can affect our present. I had an unfortunate experience 5 years ago in German speaking Switzerland. I did not speak the language well enough so they asked for the contract to stop and I agreed. I said in the interview that it was stopped on “common agreement” (stock French sentence). It’s true however they were the ones to initiate it (after 1.5 month). But I think they understood it. And I think it’s ok to self-save face. It’s in the light grey area.

This message is both a feed back to my brothers-in-arms/teachers here and to fellow forum members/students.

If you read my latest posts yes you will read my current challenges (part of life) but also and especially a string of successes (also socially and love life). I owe them to self development and TPM. So it compounds over time. That’s why it’s worth persevering in self-development, power dynamics and social skills. It may not pay now but it will pay. I may not be a gambler but if I was to bet I would bet with closed eyes on the man/woman determined to improved in these aspects. Again the timescale is years not months. So the benefits compounds on this timescale. That’s why persevering is so important.

Thank you all who helped me, I owe (again) part of my success to your help and support. You know who you are if you feel (rightly) proud. Also thanks to those who challenged me here, thanks to you I could grow a lot from those as well.

Flying!

Great going, happy to raed, John.

Made me think how crucial it is to be (socially strategic) ESPECIALLY when one wants to be honest.

I'd even say that strategic skills are the only way to marry deep life effectiveness, with truth/not lying.

New concept potentially?

I was thinking a diagram could be helpful to describe it.

This one first came to mind:

But replace:

Lie / truth and "strategic" in between.
But it shouldn't overlap with lies.
So still thinking about how to structure it.

Yes, now I understand how it looks like.

About your diagram, this evokes for me the anti-hero character in movies. For instance, the bard in Honour among thieves:

Starlord in Guardians of the Galaxy

Mad Max

And there is also Han Solo, Jack Sparrow, Deadpool, etc.

Geeking out here. I think it corresponds to the "chaotic neutral alignment" in D&D. More details here about chaotic neutral.

Happy to ping-pong more about this concept. And from my understanding, there is a more specific idea that you are articulating. And that is probably in the making.

After some thoughts, I think it corresponds more to the chaotic good. More details about chaotic good here.

I don't believe in servant leadership anymore.

After 8 months as a leader in healthcare, people will take advantage of you if you do. It's reserved only for a small minority of high quality people with a growth mindset.

As one become higher value and higher quality, as Lucio said many people will either be value neutral or taking value from us.

We become a source of value.

High-value: whether wisdom, knowledge, emotions, etc. fewer and fewer people can provide it to us. It's not a matter of socio-economical hierarchy, even if there is a correlation of course.

High-quality: as we grow, more and more people are more selfish, lazy, mean, etc. than us. And there is less and less quality people we can connect with.

Hi John

As you know I've been trying to script some role plays for my own learning (and to play with a couple of tools).  Now I'm not going to post lots of these just wanted a quick sanity check if you have the time, to make sure I wasn't making up nonsense.  Here are the scripts I made from your thread here.

The first script is what I think of as 'finished'.  The second one more WIP.  Do they 'ring true' to you.  I.e. did I accurately capture the situation?  Am I using some of our techniques and can you imagine yourself actually saying those words?

Script 1 - bypassing doctor and bringing in psych nurse

<!-- Scene: Angry toned woman’s voice coming from room and screaming child.  Nurse approaches the door walking rapidly and goes in.  Doctor in corridor turns head towards noise and looks on-->

(voice: Joanna)

<!-- Scene: Joanna casually approaches the nurse's station after seeing a patient. -->

Joanna: "Hey, I saw the psych nurse go in to see the Baumann child. How did it go with the mom and child?"

(voice: Nurse1)

Nurse1: "The mom was  getting restless, so we had to call the psychiatric nurse sooner rather than later."

(voice: Joanna)

Joanna: "     Good call.  Thanks I appreciate you guys stepping in while I was busy.

But it is my job I don’t want to put it on you guys.  If I’m on a non urgent consult, next time, could you snag me for a quick second?  Good to be all synced up.

(voice: Nurse2)

Nurse2: "Sure thing, Dr. Joanna. We'll keep you looped. And the psych nurse is with them now, everything's under control."

(voice: Joanna)

Joanna: "Yea Heidi is a good player’  I’ll pop my head in so she knows I’m around.

(voice: Nurse1)

Nurse1: "Sounds good.  We've got your back."

Script 2 -  Nurse and Senior Doctor bypassing Doctor

(voice: John)

<!-- Scene: John talking to his supervisor, Dr. Miller, in a respectful manner. -->

John: "Dr. Miller, about the Baumann case – good call on stepping in early. I'm curious, for future reference, how can I ensure I'm in sync with these decisions?"

(voice: Supervisor)

Supervisor: "John, in urgent situations, I sometimes have to make quick decisions. It's all about patient care."

(voice: John)

John: "Absolutely, patient care comes first. And at the same time, it's crucial for me to be involved for my professional growth. Maybe we can set up a quick signal or a heads-up for such situations?"

(pause: 2)

<!-- Scene: John addressing the issue with the nurse, Mike. -->

(voice: John)

John: "Mike, I saw you took charge with Dr. Miller earlier. Great initiative there. How can we coordinate better next time so we’re all across.

(voice: Nurse)

Nurse: "Well, John, sometimes things move fast here. I just go with the flow to keep everything running."

(voice: John)

John: "I get that, and equally, as part of the team, it's important for me to be up-to-date. Let's work on on giving a quick heads up

I agree with you as a general principle.

Looks good on a book, on a podcast, as an "inspiring take".

Not as well in most contexts in the real world.

One hundo on that.   It always failed the pub test.

1.  Many jnrs will happily take your job and/or play up to any hppo publicly.

2.  Most people dont care about the org only what they can get, what they can get away with and what their boss thinks

Thank you Lucio for your answer.

I still do it (going from chief to servant) but in small selected cases when I choose to add value to a particular person for a particular reason.

Hello Transitioned,

thank you for your answer.

Most people dont care about the org only what they can get, what they can get away with and what their boss thinks

Amen. PU-worthy in my opinion. Sad but true (especially "what they can get away with" like children).

Cheers.

Hello Transitioned,

thanks a lot for your answer!

Yeah I could imagine saying that. However, here we can see the diplomatic yet no-bullshit approach you developed. So I would say I'm getting there and it's now most of my communication but not yet 100%. Caring, diplomatic, leader-like, to-the-point communication.

Yeah same comment as above. I think these scripts are great. It's really great as an apprentice leader to see how you phrase things. A bit like with Lucio. Having these sentences going through one's mind is helpful to think like that.

Did I get it? I mean was there a specific thing I was supposed to comment on? At your service.
