Quote from John Freeman on January 23, 2022, 11:10 amI'm glad you guys are learning like I am learning about these cases. I learned it from you Lucio, by the way with all your case studies. I think it's a great way to learn and to uncover our weaknesses, blind spots and underlying principles.
Quote from Transitioned on January 22, 2022, 11:33 pmAnd thank you John too for sharing some of the situations that come up in your work. The work culture in Australia seems very similar to yours. Probably because we both work in large organisations. You've come up with a few power moves that I haven't seen YET 😁
We're all in this together, man! Yes it has a lot to do with very hierarchical organisations. I found that you can have big hierarchical organizations and small ones. In my current team we're only 3 doctors but the chief (1/3 of staff!) makes sure to create as much of a power differential with us as possible.

In my opinion, I think a lot of what we face has to do with ego, competition (artificial scarcity, etc.), status, resources.
So basically, I again think that the combination of capitalism-individualism-productivism-consumerism can keep us trapped in a self-defeating loop. In the past, the tribe and the family provided more connections. Now, we are more often left to our own devices to make the best of our lives. In the past, there was not so much freedom of course. What I'm finding is that the price we pay is quite high. We can achieve a lot but much of the bullshit comes from insecurities and fears that are reinforced to keep us dependent. I think we have power to change that, we're not victims. But the game is definitely rigged.
Example: in Switzerland, we earn a lot but we spend a lot. So it keeps us working and working.
Example: In my hospital, I cannot change hospital until I'm fully trained. So I have to deal with the conditions I'm given. What I mean is that if you're not at the top and if the top is not value-adding (rare case scenario), then brace yourself. So there's definitely real freedom (holidays, etc.) but also an illusion of freedom.
Example: I was naive about my hospital. I'm finding more and more that in addition of being about power, it's all about money. They hire as little people as possible to take care of as many patients as possible. So we don't get proper training but we're working like dogs. What happens is that as soon as (high-quality) people have the power to move out, they leave this dysfunctional organization. The only people who stay are those who have either too low of a self-esteem to think they deserve more or those who don't have better opportunities due to ties to the location or other reasons.
To end on a positive note: self-development, self-awareness and skill building are the only thing to get us unstuck. And changing environment as well. So it's definitely possible. However, I think it's important to recognize that the environment is dysfunctional.

Quote from Ali Scarlett on January 31, 2022, 1:35 amWanted to say "thank you" to Matthew for starting the thread, "The Challenges of Marketing ThePowerMoves".
It's given me a space to brainstorm more with the community and exchange ideas on psychology, something I'm deeply interested in (aside from sociology and social psychology).

Yep, +1, plus the book also came out of it :)

Quote from John Freeman on February 6, 2022, 6:21 pmThanks to @lucio for pointing me to the lesson about self-defense against tasking in PU. It's brilliant. I printed it and I'm going to read it again.
Tasking is one of the cornerstone of power.
Did you come up with it or does it come it from a book?
Thanks to @aliscarlett for your mantra: "I'm my own judge". It's quite powerful to retain self-confidence and self-esteem.
Could you point me to the post please? I cannot find it anymore.
Cheers!

Quote from Ali Scarlett on February 6, 2022, 7:02 pmGlad it's working for you, John, but I can't take credit here, that line is all Lucio :).
You can find it in Power University here: "I am my own judge, I don’t have to justify myself to others".
Let me know if that lesson above is what you're looking for. If it's not, I'll take a look for that post.

To be 100% accurate I'd have to go through the lesson again, but for a quick answer: as far as I recall it's mostly TPM's production, and if there were resources, it was mostly this forum,

Well, I'm impressed. I think you found your calling with the power and social dynamics fields: you really do have a "knack" for it.

Must channel the compliment and "thanks" back to the TPM community though.
TPM / PU, as well as social/power dynamics in general wouldn't be nearly as good today if it weren't for the people here.
Thank you John.
